An excessive amount of workload has been keeping me from my scanning/blogging duties. So, rather than miss another weeks update, I decided to put my iPhone to work.

It's not up to the usual resolution and colour I like to have, but it is a drawing of a lady, so I guess it will have to do.

Norman Rockwell did a self portrait for the Saturday Evening Post in 1960. I had forgotten about it until I did this drawing a while back. After I did the drawing, something about it was bugging me for weeks, and I wasn't sure what it was. Then it suddenly clicked. I went back and checked out the Rockwell painting and I was surprised how close I was to it. Weird how that stuff rattles around in the back of your head and percolates to the surface. Without realizing it, I had almost exactly copied the composition, staging, and pose. All I did was substitute a naked lady where there used to be a middle aged man.

Not surprising if I had done it intentionally, but subconsciously? What happens if I try to draw the Night Watch, or the Last Supper?

As a person who draws for a living, one of the best things that can ever happen is when I find a drawing that someone has left for me.

It's like waking up on Christmas morning and seeing a big, fat present all wrapped up with your name on it. Except it's even better, because you already know what the present is, and it's not some lousy clothes from your crazy old Aunt Enid, it's chocolate coated glow in the dark lego that shoots lazers at your sister and gives your younger brother electric shocks if he ever tries to get his grubby hands on it.

Extra points if you guess who did this little beauty, and left it about halfway through a stack of fresh paper on my clipboard.

I don't normally like to put up unedited pages of sketches. A page of sketches is usually where I like to experiment, and like anything else, if you are working outside of a comfort zone, inevitably some things are not going to work out right. As much as I enjoy the process of drawing, I appreciate the ability to edit out the less attractive side of the process.

That having been said, I thought I would put up a couple of pages for fun. Sometimes, I feel like the sheer crowdedness of the paper ends up looking kind of cool. It would be nice if it was a crowded page with every drawing on it looking amazing, but I can't seem to win 'em all

Usually, if I want to use some texture in the paper of my drawings I need to go out and find something myself. This time I figured out that if you just leave your drawings on the floor and there is a one year old and a four year old in the house, a nice crumpled texture seems to just appear out of nowhere. For me, the point of this blog was to provide myself with a bit of an outlet for pent up drawing hyperactivity. It also allows me to feel that all that time I spend drawing pictures of pretty girls in various states of disrobe had some sort of purpose. It might seem like a frivolous mission in life, but hey, we can't all cure cancer and stop wars. Some of us have to draw naked ladies so that the cancer curing people and war stoppers have something to look at on the weekends as a way to relax. Then they can be all charged up and productive on monday morning knowing that there are beautiful things in this world, and that humanity is worth saving. Besides, it's got to be almost impossible to start a war while you are looking at drawings of cute girls, so I like to think I'm keeping the wars from even starting, which really takes some of the load off the folks who are trying to stop wars. It's a huge responsibility, I know, but I'm ok with that.

Ordinarily, I try to post a drawing every week, to keep things interesting around here and keep the cancer people productive. I used to post whenever I had a drawing and time to scan it, but I found that without a regular schedule to keep me on my toes, things would get a little haywire. The drawing part isn't usually a problem, but the scanning, cropping, resizing, ftp sessions, logging in, posting, editing... I'd almost rather get caught in the middle of a cancer zone with an incurable case of war. So, Inevitably I end up sliding back into my comfort zone and steeping in the warm relaxing zen of pushing pencils around on paper. Before long I'd have a stack of paper six inches deep, nothing scanned, nothing posted and a shameful amount of time passing without posting a single doodle.

Now I'm much better, because I know, my chores for the weekend are, do my laundry, feed the kids, change diapers, post to my blog, clean the house, etc... It can be good to have some structure in your life. So now I post once a week, and once only. Very regular. It's like my blog is suddenly getting lots of fibre in it's diet.

Now, I definitely do more than one drawing a week, so I know I can scan a whole batch of drawings in a single session of scanning, save myself a bit of time, and have several weeks worth of drawings all lined up and ready to go. As a result, I sometimes find myself posting a drawing I did a few months in advance, which can have serious drawbacks. Mainly because I see the drawing in an entirely different light a few weeks later.

For instance,

A couple of months ago, The mismatched arm sizes and stiff posing of this drawing didn't bother me quite so much. Today I want to punch myself right in the drawing arm as a punishment.

I feel like I've let the cancer people down this week. If they don't find a cure on monday, you know who to blame.
